Samsung introduces new 1 TB hard drives for laptops
On Tuesday, Samsung Electronics announced that they could provide 1 TB of storage to meet the growing demand of laptop users through their latest hard disk Spinpoint M6.
Andy Higginbotham, director of hard drive sales at Samsung said that they were able to fit three 167 GB platters in a small frame to make a 2.5 inch 500 GB hard drive which spins at 5,400 RPM. Two drives can be fitted into commercial and multimedia laptops to make 1 TB of storage.
Samsung also announced another hard disk Spinpoint MP2 which provides 250 GB of storage and comes with an optional chip that protects hard drive from vibrations caused by other components. This model has been aimed for use in desktop replacement notebooks, workstations and blade servers. MP2 is much faster than M6 as it spins at 7,200 RPM.
This is not the first time that 1 TB storage has been offered in a laptop, Hitachi also attempted to do this by combining two 500 GB hard drives in Asus M70S laptop.
Both hard drives costs $299 and comes an optional free-fall sensor, which turns off the hard drive in the event of a fall which will protect the data on it.
